External audit and assurance services
The purpose of the audit is to enhance the target users' degree of confidence in the financial statements. This is achieved by the auditor expressing an opinion as to whether the financial statements have been prepared, in all material respects, in accordance with the applicable financial reporting framework. In the case of most general purpose frameworks, that view relates to whether the financial statements are presented fairly, in all material respects, or whether they give a true and fair view in accordance with the framework. An audit, conducted in accordance with relevant auditing standards and ethical requirements, enables the auditor to form that opinion. Auditing standards also require the auditor to base his opinion on reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements as a whole are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. Reasonable assurance is a high level of assurance. It is reached when the auditor obtains sufficient appropriate audit evidence to reduce the audit risk, which is the risk of the auditor expressing an inappropriate opinion
